Changing the Tide: Surfer Darrick Clayton
Darrick Clayton has been a long time ocean lover for all his life. Growing up in Carlsbad, California, Darrick reminisces on his time fostering a relationship in the water–through friends, boogie boarding, and surfing. Over the years, the sea has become his second home. Darrick’s passion for surfing has permeated every routine. He eats, breathes, sleeps, all things surf!
Throughout his surfing journey, Darrick Clayton noticed the lack of racial representation in and out of the water. For Darrick, race hasn’t been a barrier in his journey, rather, it has created a sense of intrigue inviting others in the surfing community to delve deeper into his unique perspective and experiences.
In this short video piece, Darrick shares his journey as a Black surfer, weaving together anecdotes from his surfing adventures in California and beyond. With authenticity and insight, he reflects on the unique challenges and triumphs he has encountered while navigating the waves as a person of color. Through his storytelling, Darrick offers a glimpse into the vibrant tapestry of the surfing community, highlighting both the joys and complexities of being a Black surfer in today's world.
